Sterlington hosts Kinder on Friday

Going into extra innings against a Class 2A powerhouse on the road is never easy. Easy or not, the Sterlington Panthers passed the test and beat Calvary Baptist 3-1 Monday night.

No. 2 Sterlington got the big hit it needed in the top of the eighth inning. Thomas Giddens squeezed a comeback pitch into center field to score a pair of runs and give Sterlington the cushion it needed to advance to the second round.

"It was a great ball game." Sterlington coach David Parks said. "We got the timely hits and had a great pitching performance from Chad."

Chad Reeves allowed just two hits, one being a home run, to allow his offense to play the spoiler to the Calvary season.

The game was also a little extra special for the Panthers because five former Sterlington players are now playing at Calvary.

Sterlington had chances to take the lead before the extra innings affair, but Calvary turned away every advance.

The Panthers got the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings, only to see Calvary use their stellar defense to get out of the inning and leave the Panthers searching for answers.

Sterlington will try to find that magic again on Friday when they host Kinder High School at 5 p.m.

"They are a good ball team," Parks said. "It is the same as always, we will have to get some timely hits and pitch well to win."

The winner of the game advances to the Class 2A state tournament May 12-14 at Warhawk Field on the campus of ULM.
