Ouachita to travel for opening round

The Ouachita Lions finished the regular season in third-place in the competitive district 2-5A.

A win over rivals Ruston and West Monroe showed the Lions have improved much in the past year.

On Monday, the team earned a Class 5A playoff spot as the No.28 team in the bracket and will travel to Bossier City to meet No.5 Airline.

The game will be at Viking Stadium at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Vikings earned the home game after an incredible run through the regular season.

The Airline Vikings won district 1-5A although they will actually enter the playoffs on a two-game losing streak.

Airline (24-6) lost to Arkansas High School in Texarkana, Ark., last week 5-4 before dropping the season finale to Ruston 5-2.

Before the skid began for the Vikings they were averaging 9.5 per game. Airline posted a 34-0 victory over Huntington on April 9.

Andy Roberts and Brian Gephardt have been lights out both hitting and pitching as of late for Ouachita.

While the Lions have not settled on a playoff starter for their first game, the Lions are working on controlling their pitches to keep the Airline offense down so their own offense can go to work.

Ouachita has used this philosophy to its advantage in the past as they kept West Monroe off balance in a 13-3 victory on April 23 and followed that performance up with a 11-0 shutout over Natchitoches Central.
