WOHS fights Belle Chasse to end

The West Ouachita Lady Chiefs (32-5) fought their hearts out, but in the end Belle Chasse took home the Class 4A softball state championship.

After a grueling eight innings of battle, Belle Chasse got the winning hit from Lauren Wilson and won their first softball title in 22 years.

The championship is the second Class 4A title this school year for Belle Chasse. The school claimed their first ever football state championship by beating Archbishop Shaw in New Orleans back in December.

Alexandra Breland had doubled on the previous at-bat and scored along with Kat Angeles in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Belle Chasse grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning when Wilson got an RBI single. Wilson was also the winning pitcher for Belle Chase.

West Ouachita refuse to quit as they tied the game 1-1 in the fourth on a RBI hit by Brooke Potier which scored Hannah LaBorde from second.

"After that," said West Ouachita head coach Lori Bruscato. "I think we started thinking too much and I wasn't trusting my pitcher."

West Ouachita went scoreless over the last four innings as Belle Chasse kept coming up with incredible defensive catches one after another.

"When Alex led off with a single, I thought we got into a good position," Bruscato said. "I think it all came down to who had the last at-bat because I know we wanted it as bad as them."

West Ouachita reached the title game earlier Saturday by beating Sam Houston, 2-0, behind the shutout pitching performance of senior Samantha Hamby.

Hamby struck out 12 Sam Houston batters in the victory and allowed just three hits the entire seven innings she was on the mound.
