Lady Rebels travel this weekend
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Lady Rebels softball team overcame a slow offensive start in the second round of the LHSAA Class 5A softball playoffs Thursday night to defeat Covington 1-0.

West Monroe pitcher Savannah Dollar went pitch-for-pitch with Covington's Lisa Stanga for nine innings before the Lady Rebels finally got the break they needed.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning, freshman shortstop Taylor Foster hit a pop up into right field that got lost from the Covington players as they fought to find the ball.

By the time the ball hit the ground, Kiley Ray of West Monroe had already crossed home plate to send West Monroe to the LHSAA state tournament this weekend in Sulphur.

Foster has been a savior of the West Monroe season all year as she also got the five-run rally started that beat Assumption last week and helped send West Monroe further in the postseason again against Covington.

West Monroe, the fourth seed, will battle No.5 St. Thomas Moore of Lafayette on Friday at 4 p.m. at Frasch Park in Sulphur.

All four of the Class 5A top seeds are still alive as the games shift down south for the tournament.

Semi-final action is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and the Class 5A championship will be decided Saturday at 7 p.m.
