Lady Panthers make state tournament for first time in six years

The Sterlington Lady Panthers (17-12-1) have advanced to the LHSAA state softball tournament for the first time since the 2003 season when the school claimed the Class 1A softball state championship
Playing at Riverside in the second round for the second consecutive season, Sterlington overcame the hurdle this year and beat Riverside 4-3.
Sara Wood gave the Sterlington offense the punch it needed with a late inning, solo home run to win the game.
Devan Reese picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Panthers as she followed the Wood home run with a perfect seventh inning and 10 strikeouts in all.
A three-run fourth inning by Riverside almost spelled doom for Sterlington. Reese pitched her way out of trouble and got Sterlington out of the inning in a 3-3 tie before Wood delivered the lethal blow over the left field wall.
Sterlington will play Rosepine (32-2) at 4 p.m. Friday at Frasch Park in Sulphur. Rosepine has been incredible in the month of April with five shutout victories in their last six outings.
Rosepine earned the trip to Sulphur with a pair of 10-0 playoff victories over Episcopal of Baton Rouge and Mamou.
Making their first state tournament appearance in six years, Sterlington and their game will be paired up against the South Beauregard-Sacred Heart game to be played at noon on Friday.
