Cultura Book Club enjoyed a program of favorite hymns sung by Jan Clay at the March meeting, held in the D'Arbonne Hills home of member Kitty Liner.

Clay is the daughter of the Rev. Lowell and Edna Ashbrook, former pastor and wife of the First Assembly of God Church in West Monroe. Clay's grandfather, Rev. E.L. Tanner, founded First Assembly in 1924.

The program consisted of Clay relating the background of a hymn, weaving tales of her life and family into the narration, and then singing a hymn a cappella. She stated that her love of hymns was passed down to her by her mother, who sang them as she worked around the house. Clay's album, "From the Heart," is a tribute to her parents.

Concluding, she invited club members to join her in singing "It is Well with My Soul," and she then presented each club member with one of her CDs.

The business session of the meeting was conducted by the president, Sue Drewett. Pat Funderburk read the month's poem, "Autumn," written some years ago by a fourth-grader. As a surprise, Funderburk revealed that she herself was the author. Hostesses with Liner were Vivian Muckleroy and Funderburk.
