Jackson makes history; Chiefs draft LSU defensive end with No. 3 pick
NEW YORK -- Defensive end Tyson Jackson made LSU football history on Saturday afternoon, becoming the highest drafted defensive player ever for the Tigers as the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the third overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft.
"I am so thrilled for Tyson and his family," LSU head coach Les Miles said. "He's a great example of what can be accomplished when you combine great ability, desire and work ethic with a school like LSU and all of the opportunities that we offer, both on the field and off the field."
"It's been fun to watch Tyson mature and develop during his LSU career. He's proof that hard work and being dedicated to the program pays off. This is a great day for Tyson and his family and it's a great day for LSU."
Jackson, a native of Edgard, La., becomes the third consecutive LSU player to be selected by the Chiefs in the first round. Last year, Kansas City took defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey with the fifth overall pick and former LSU wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was a first round choice of the organization in 2007.
Jackson's selection extends an impressive streak of six straight years LSU has produced a first round draft pick and the third straight season the Tigers have produced a top five overall pick. That former is expected take over as the nation's longest active streak of a first-round picks, supplanting Miami which is not expected to have a first rounder for the first time since 1995.
Jackson joins Dorsey and JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, as top five draft choices under head coach Les Miles.
Under Miles, LSU has also produced three straight years of top 10 defensive picks and seven first round picks overall. Jackson, Dorsey and LaRon Landry, the sixth overall pick of the 2007 draft by the Washington Redskins, were all top 10 selections.
It is the first time an SEC team has produced three straight years of top five draft picks since Auburn in the late 1980s: Aundray Bruce (1988), Brent Fullwood (1987) and Bo Jackson (1986).
