National Champions: West Monroe Powerlifting

The West Monroe High School powerlifting team was perfect all season long. They completed their 2009 season last weekend with the crown jewel of competition.

The Rebels lifted their way to the APF National High School Championship in Baton Rouge.

The Rebels had three individual national champions in Josh Winstead at 132 lbs., Ryan Brown in the 242-lbs. class, and Mac Dawney in the 275-lbs. class.

"We were real pleased with the way the team performed all season long," West Monroe head coach Buddy Bell said. "Both varsity and junior varsity went undefeated this year and stayed strong the whole way through. We were proud of all of them for their efforts."

National runner-up competitors from West Monroe were Craig Edwards in the 123-lbs. class and Logan Lee in the 181-lbs. class.

Brian Allen placed third in the 114-lbs division while Anavous Pierce placed third in the individual part of the 132-lbs. class.

Dillon Davis placed fourth in the 148-lbs. class. Spencer Hutchinson was fifth in the 165-lbs. class and teammate Aaron Turner was sixth-place in that same weight division.

Kyle Pizzalatto placed sixth in the 198-lbs. class. Jacob Tyson of West Monroe placed sixth in 220-lbs. division to round out the individual awards for the Rebels.

The West Monroe powerlifters were successful throughout the season with wins all over the state.

The team began the year by winning the LHSPLA North Regional back in February. The team then followed that up with an encore at the LHSPLA state meet.

The March competition saw the Rebels win the state championship for the fifth consecutive time in the school's storied history.

During the course of the year, the Rebels established nine school records as well as three Louisiana state records.

Not to be outdone by their more experienced teammates, the junior varsity squad from West Monroe also took home a APF national championship from Baton Rouge as well.

Morgan Allbritton was the only female lifter to compete at the national level from West Monroe. Allbritton shined in the spotlight with a national championship in the 105-lbs. class.
