Tigers on hunt for district championship
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Neville Tigers (17-9-1, 8-1 district 2-4A) swept a three-game series from the Bastrop Rams over the weekend and now look poised to claim another district championship.

Neville continues to dominate district foes in every aspect of the game and especially has been solid at the plate with several players batting above .400.

Neville, ranked No.10 in Class 4A, beat Bastrop 6-3 last Thursday in a game where the Tigers rallied the offense in the late stages of the game to win.

"We are working on getting better fundamentally," Neville head coach Tim O'Neal said. "We have done a pretty good job throwing the baseball."

It was not nearly as close on Saturday when the teams met for a double-header at Neville. The Tigers pounded the ball on their way to a sweep of the series.

In the first game, Neville jumped out to a comfortable lead in the opening frame and cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings.

Bastrop threatened in the third and fourth innings to score more runs, but the Neville defense stiffened and held the charge back to secure another district victory.

In the night cap, Neville again found its offensive rhythm and pounced on the Rams early.

Another five-inning affair saw Neville win 14-2 and climb ever closer to West Ouachita and the district championship.

Matt Gayle and Johnny Joplin picked up pitching wins in the series. The Tigers pitching staff has brought their best work to district games this season while the offense has supplied the scores needed to run away with the last few district games.

Neville has scored 10 or more runs in six district games this season and stays just one game behind West Ouachita for the district lead.

A three-game set next week will likely determine the district championship when the Tigers meet West Ouachita to settle things on the field.
