Rebels squeak by Sterlington, continue district play
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The West Monroe Rebels (13-8, 4-0) were in a defensive fight with the Sterlington Panthers for a few innings on Saturday.

The game went scoreless for the first three innings before the Rebels broke out of their hitting slump and went on to win over the No.2-ranked Panthers, 6-5.

Blake Brassell, D.J. Banks, Cody Stone, Corey White and Jeffery Fuller all recorded RBI hits for the Rebels as they secured the win late in the contest with solid defense and timely contact hitting.

Cole Bagby and Clay Branton led Sterlington (19-6, 7-0) at the plate on Saturday. The Panthers struggled to score runs in the beginning and found their way back into the game only to see the Rebels shut the door in the seventh inning.

West Monroe will now get back in the swing of things in district 2-5A play with a pair of big district games this week.

West Monroe will host Ouachita Thursday at 6 p.m. in what promises to be a huge game for both teams as playoff seeding becomes a big part of discussions at the end of April.

The Rebels stormed back from a 3-0 deficit at Ouachita and won 7-5 on April 4. West Monroe has struggled to score runs early in the games and has been working to improve their plate performances.

The pitching and defense has come together nicely for the young West Monroe team. The team has rallied behind its defense for six consecutive victories this month.

West Monroe will host the Ruston Bearcats on Saturday at 2 p.m. in what should be another exciting match-up between the two heated rivals.

It will also mark the last time for at least a couple of years that Ruston visits West Monroe as a district opponent. The Bearcats will move into Class 4A next season during reclassification that will last through the 2011 season.
