Parish could get $200,000 for energy efficiency project

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury may be awarded federal funding to make the parish courthouse more energy efficient.

Police juror Charles Jackson says federal funding is available through an Energy Efficiency Community Development Block Grant for that purpose.

"The parish would be able to probably see some money come from that," Jackson said. "After talking with a gentleman from the Department of Natural Resources in Baton Rouge, what they would like to see done with that money is retrofitting government buildings to try and be more energy efficient."

That would involve changing light bulbs and weather stripping among other things, Jackson said.

It is not known exactly how much money the parish would be awarded for the energy efficiency project, he said.

"The city of Monroe, just from the direct allocation from the Department of Energy, should be seeing around $550,000," Jackson said. "The gentleman with the Department of Natural Resources believes we would see somewhere in the vicinity of $200,000."

"When that comes, we will need to decide how best to spend that money," Jackson added.
