Jindal highlights groundbreaking for Delta Community College

Gov. Bobby Jindal marked the groundbreaking of Delta Community College's new campus in Monroe Thursday, emphasizing that Delta's record of accomplishment and the role community colleges play in the state's workforce development system.

"After eight years of housing their classes and offices at other schools, Delta Community College will finally have their own home," Jindal said. "This is a great day for Delta Community College and all of Northeast Louisiana."

Jindal was joined by a large crowd at the ground-breaking ceremony, which was held on the property where Delta's new campus will be built. It's located off Interstate 20 just east of Monroe.

"In existence for just eight years, Delta Community College has experienced tremendous growth - almost quadrupling enrollment in their first five years," Jindal said. "And even while not having their own campus, Delta Community College has managed to play a critical role in training people to ensure that businesses in Northeast Louisiana have a highly skilled workforce.

"This campus is long overdue and I was proud to support the state Bond Commission when it pproved $45 million in revenue bonds for the Delta Campus Facilities Corporation Project to fund construction for Delta Community College's new location."

In January 2008, the state Bond Commission approved $45 million in revenue bonds for the Delta Campus Facilities Corporation Project to fund construction, improvements, developments and equipping a new campus for Delta Community College to be located in Monroe and all new equipment, furnishings, fixtures and facilities needed for the new campus. After delays caused by the unstable bond market, on November 14, bonds were finally sold to enable Delta Community College to build its own campus in Monroe. Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2010.

Established in 2001, Delta Community College is currently housed on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. For the first two years, Delta Community College occupied part of Louisiana Technical College's Ouachita Campus. In 2003 they moved to the University of Louisiana at Monroe, but have also occupied space at the West Monroe Alternative School, Swanson Correctional Facility, Monroe City Annex, and Eastgate Shopping Center.
