Access road work at port to begin in near future Construction on the Greater Ouachita Port's next major project, a $2-million access road, could begin by summer.
The new access road would connect the port's existing rail-side storage to its dock-side storage area.
Port commission chairman Ricky Guillot said the access road would provide security at the port facility.
When the access road is completed, the facility could be enclosed. At that point, the port would be eligible to pursue homeland security funding and other grants from federal agencies, which require structures to be secure.
Guillot said there are funding opportunities on the federal level the port may pursue which it cannot apply for at this time since the port's campus is not secure.
"By having this access road, it would move us off Valley Road, which then gives us the ability for securitization efforts," Guillot said. "Basically, that's homeland security issues and it allows us to be self-contained. That's a pretty important feature for the port campus, especially from a security perspective."
"When we securitize the campus and get off the public access road, then we will be getting into those other avenues of potential funding," Guillot added.
Once construction on the new access road begins some time this summer, it should take at least four months for the project to be completed. |
