Delta Air Lines will slash leisure fares through next month to several key markets out of Monroe Regional Airport in an attempt to boost traffic.

Delta also lowered its structured products, which would cut airfares by as much as 30 percent overall.

According to Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, "city officials have been working hard to secure lower ticket fares for our local air travelers."

Monroe is the birthplace of Delta Airlines, and we commend Delta for creating this special ticket offer," Mayo said. "Now, those utilizing the Monroe Regional Airport for spring and summer business or leisure travel can see a substantial savings."

Monroe City Council chairman Robert Stevens encouraged residents to take advantage of the savings during the limited-time offer.

"Hopefully, having more passengers on our flights will pave the way for future special rates or lower permanent airfares," Stevens said.

Monroe city officials and Delta representatives announced the changes during a news conference late last week at Monroe Regional.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Delta Airlines, Delta will offer a limited time "80/80 sale." Anyone can fly Monroe on Delta Airlines for just $80 each way ($160 round trip) for flights to Atlanta, Memphis and 15 other connector markets in the southeast region.

To qualify for the 80/80 airfare reduction, tickets must be purchased at least 21 days in advance. The $80 fare will be available for purchase through Friday, May 31. The tickets can be for flights taken Wednesday, April 22, through Friday, July 31.

"We finally have what we have been asking for ... lower ticket prices," said Cleve Norrell, manager of Monroe Regional. "We will keep working hard to gain additional lower fares from our other carriers."

Norrell and Monroe Regional Airport marketing director Ron Phillips sought lower Delta fares for the past year.
