Area players on Class 5A all-state team The Class 5A state champion Ouachita Lions landed two players on the Class 5A all-state team this year.
Guard Nick Haywood was named Class 5A most outstanding player after averaging 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 2.7 steals per game this season.
Haywood was also named the Class 5A state championship game MVP after scoring 19 points in the win over Hahnville that claimed the first state championship in basketball in the history of Ouachita Parish High School.
Mike Shaw, the Lions starting center, was also an honorable mention after averaging over 11 rebounds per game for the Class 5A champions in his senior season.
Cory Lacy of West Monroe, another area team that made the Class 5A semi-finals, was selected to the second-team Class 5A all-state after averaging 14.3 points per game.
Lacey was instrumental as a junior in leading the Rebels to their first Top 28 appearance since 1990.
Hahnville, the state runner-up to Ouachita, did not place any players on the all-state squad. The Tigers reached the finals as a No.12 seed in the playoffs.
Hahnville head coach Brian Lumar, however, was named Class 5A coach of the year on the boy's side.
On the girl's side, West Monroe forward Kassieta Brown was named to the second-team. Brown averaged 18.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game in her senior season at West Monroe.
Brown now plans to continue her basketball career at Southern Mississippi University next year.
Ouachita forward Mariah Brown was an honorable mention on this year's all-state team in Class 5A.
