Ouachita, West Monroe to clash Saturday
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Ouachita Lions began district play Saturday afternoon with a huge offensive onslaught and a 13-3 win over the Natchitoches Central Chiefs last week.

Known for their deep pitching staff, Natchitoches Central had little arm strength to overpower a batting order from Ouachita that was determined to bring the pressure from the opening pitch.

Andy Roberts and Jason Johnson each had a pair of hits to lead Ouachita. Ouachita has gotten consistent offensive production the last two games, something coaches had expressed concern about at the plate coming out of the Ouachita Chevron Tournament in Monroe.

Ouachita (8-12, 1-1) did not fare as well Tuesday in a home game against the Ruston Bearcats. Perhaps burned by the prospects of getting handled by West Monroe days earlier, Ruston took their frustrations out on Ouachita in a 11-2 win over the Lions.

Now Ouachita will turn their attention to the West Monroe Rebels for a 2 p.m. showdown at Lions Field this Saturday.

West Monroe's Jeffery Fuller and Blake Brasell have been on a offensive tear coming off a 12-4 win over Ruston last Saturday.

Brassell leads the team in RBI while Fuller has been the home run specialist on a Rebel team that has won six of their last nine outings.

Ouachita is working on improving their defense and not making errors in the field — something that hurt against Ruston and would be just as painful if not corrected against West Monroe.

The game is key in district 2-5A play as Ouachita tries to put a blemish on the perfect district record of the Rebels and themselves climb to the top of the district championship race.
