Rebels smash Bearcats

The West Monroe Rebels will continue district play when they travel to Ouachita Saturday at 2 p.m. in what is expected to be another classic match-up between two of the area's top baseball programs.

West Monroe (9-8, 1-0) began district 2-5A play off on the right foot last weekend with a convincing 12-4 victory over the Ruston Bearcats.

Blake Brassell went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the contest and Corey White was the top hitter in the game for the Rebels as he recorded both a home run and a triple for the home team.

Jeffery Fuller, a junior infielder, also went deep for West Monroe as they posted seven runs in the first three innings against Ruston pitcher Cullen Bishop (5-2).

Junior Stephen Smith (2-3) picked up the complete game win for the Rebels. He held the Bearcats scoreless until a single run in the fourth inning, which was followed by a single run in each of the final three frames of the game.

Junior Cody Stone and senior Josh Remedies have also been swinging the bats well for West Monroe as they have come on strong and won six of their last nine games.

West Monroe has recently owned the series against Ouachita, but an up-and-coming Ouachita squad has had moments of brilliant play at home this season.

Ouachita beat Mangham 11-1 to begin the season at home. They also beat Southwood at home by a 7-4 margin.

Ouachita won their first district game last Thursday with a 13-3 win over Natchitoches Central.

Ruston then turned around a burned the Lions on Tuesday night with a 11-2 win over Ouachita.
