Chamber opposes increase

The West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to oppose an increase of Louisiana's homestead exemption.

In February, the Board stated their position to members of the Northeast Louisiana delegation and Secretary of State, Jay Dardenne, during a private luncheon of the Chamber Board and elected officials.

The increase is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Legislative Session. The proposal will be an increase from $75,000 to $160,000. Blake Wheelis, 2009 Volunteer Chairman stated, "The current Louisiana homestead exemption is one of the highest in the country. It places an unfair burden on business and industry and places a great deal of responsibility on municipalities and parishes to provide funding for projects. To increase the amount further will place our state at a terrific disadvantage to attract business. In addition, it does not send a good message to those businesses currently in Louisiana."

The Louisiana Association for Business and Industry will oppose the measure.
