Dardenne tells Quota "Why Louisiana ain't Mississippi"

Louisiana has a lot to crow about, according to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne.

Dardenne was on hand Thursday at the Monroe Quota Club's annual fundraiser where he presented a two-hour long lecture titled "Why Louisiana Ain't Mississippi."

"Louisiana is a great big gumbo of all the various cultures that have gone into making us the state we are," Dardenne said. "Those influences from the various cultures and countries are why Louisiana ain't Mississippi."

During the presentation, Dardenne outlined more than 300 years of history and music, mixing humor, politics and religion together to weave a portrait of Louisiana.

Monroe Quota Club president Judy Cryer said she was excited about Dardenne's lecture because of his vast knowledge of the state's history and culture.

"We're just very excited because he's so entertaining," Cryer said. "And we were all looking forward to everything we learned about Louisiana."

Cryer said people are already looking forward to next year and that bodes well for the 2008 event.

"We haven't gotten the net figure yet," Cryer said.

"But all indications are it was a success."

In addition to Dardenne's lecture, attendees also took part in a door prize raffle. While several people won centerpieces and Louisiana-themed art, Angie Monger of Monroe took home the most exciting prize of the night. Monger and a friend will travel to New York City for a three-day, three-night all inclusive trip.

Also during the evening, State Rep. Kay Kellogg Katz presented Quotarian Cybil Christman with a certificate from the Louisiana House of Representatives, commending Christman on 50 years of service to Quota Club.

Quota International is a service organization focused on providing services to those in need.

Cryer said the proceeds from Thursday's fundraiser will go to support the Monroe chapter's mission.

"Our emphasis is in helping people with speech and hearing impairments and disadvantaged women and children," Cryer said. "We provide these services through our projects."
