Homers power Ole Miss past LSU, 7-4

BATON ROUGE -- Freshman designated hitter Matt Snyder hit two of the Rebels' four homers as 11th ranked Ole Miss topped second-ranked LSU, 7-4 Friday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (19-6, 4-3) will continue the series against Ole Miss (16-6, 5-2) Saturday at 3 p.m. CT. The Tigers will send senior right-hander Louis Coleman (5-1, 1.21 ERA) to the mound, while Ole Miss will counter with junior right-hander Phillip Irwin (4-0, 1.82 ERA).

The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net (channel 38 in Baton Rouge) as well as on the LSU Sports Radio Network (WDGL 98.1 in Baton Rouge). The Geaux Zone at www.lsusports.net will also have live stats, video and audio.

Ole Miss starter Drew Pomeranz (2-0) had an impressive outing, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out five.

LSU starter Anthony Ranuado (2-2) got the loss as he allowed six runs on six hits and struck out nine in 6.2 innings of work.

"It was a frustrating night," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We've got to find a way to score runs to support Anthony, so he doesn't feel like every pitch he throws has to be perfect. We need to come back out tomorrow, be aggressive at the plate and give ourselves a chance to even this series."

LSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when first baseman Sean Ochinko singled in Jared Mitchell, who doubled off the top of the wall in deep center field one batter earlier.

The Rebels tied the score 1-1 in the top of the second when designated hitter Matt Snyder launched a solo homer over the right-center field wall.

Ole Miss extended that lead to 2-1 when first baseman Matt Smith hit a solo homer off Ranaudo to lead off the fifth inning.

The Rebels continued the scoring in the sixth when Snyder blasted his second home run of the game, a two-out, three-run dinger over the right field wall to put Ole Miss up 5-1. Snyder has homered four times in the last three games.

Ole Miss went up 6-1 in the seventh when second baseman Tim Ferguson doubled off the wall in right to score catcher Brett Basham.

Right-hander Nolan Cain came on in relief for Ranaudo with two outs in the seventh and struck out left fielder Logan Power to end the inning. Cain was impressive, allowing only one run on three hits while striking out four in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Tigers responded in the seventh when Leon Landry doubled to right to score Chris McGhee and Mikie Mahtook to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Ole Miss right fielder Jeremy Travis homered to lead-off the eighth inning, increasing the Rebel lead to 7-3.

LSU answered in the bottom half of the eighth when Blake Dean singled to right to score Ochinko and make the score 7-4.
