West Monroe opens district 2-5A play at home

The West Monroe Rebels will begin their quest for another district 2-5A championship Saturday when they host their arch rival, the Ruston Bearcats.

West Monroe had a hot start to the Chevron tournament as they beat the second-ranked Barbe Bucs of Class 5A, 14-2, on Thursday night.

The Rebels (7-8) pounded out 13 hits to get the win after just five innings of play. Josh Remedies (3-1) picked up the victory for the Rebels.

D.J. Banks delivered the big blow in the fourth inning with a RBI triple. The hit was part of a nine-run fourth inning that stunned Barbe and sent the Rebels on to their biggest victory of the season.

Blake Brassel and Stephen Smith each hit home runs during the offensive onslaught for West Monroe.

Brassel is being counted on for power at the plate. The senior third baseman has responded with several big hits this season.

West Monroe followed the Barbe win with a 9-8 win over another big rival, the Neville Tigers. West Monroe got just enough offense early on and good defense late to hold on to the victory.

The game went back-and-forth all night before West Monroe got some huge defensive grabs and outs in the final inning to put the game away.

Ruston also won a pair of games in the Ouachita tournament and will be headed to West Monroe with a district championship in their list of goals this year.

Ruston has always been the toughest out in district play for the Rebels in recent years, and this talented Ruston team can pitch and hit the ball well.

Ruston will be riding a three-game winning streak as they come to West Monroe on Saturday — and neither team will be keen on losing their first district contest.
