Richwood Rams top Class 3A

The Richwood Rams are back on top of the Class 3A mountain after a thrilling 75-61 victory over the Vidalia Vikings Saturday night at the Cajundome in Lafayette.

Richwood got 19 points from guard LaDon Carter as he garnered championship game Most Valuable Player honors.

The championship is the second since 2005 for the Rams under head coach Terry Martin Sr.

"We were on edge the entire game," Martin said. "I called a time out to calm them down. You could look in their eyes and tell they were going to do it."

Richwood (20-11) led Vidalia 17-15 after the first quarter as the teams battled back-and-forth. Carter exploded for three high-rise dunks in the second quarter that propelled the Rams to a 39-25 halftime advantage.

Vidalia (30-2) came out with intense defensive pressure in the second half and were able to climb back into the game in the fourth quarter as they cut the Richwood lead to just four points.

The score was 58-54 with 4:33 left to play. Richwood struggled from the free-throw line at the beginning of the fourth quarter and had several costly turnovers that put the Vikings right back in the hunt for their own Class 3A title.

Torrey Dixon led the offensive punch of the Vikings with 18 points. Dixon was one of four Viking players to score in double-figures to no avail in the second half of the game.

"We knew coming in they were a talented team," Martin said. "Our guys wanted the game so bad because of what had happened. They did not want this one to slip away."

Marcies Davis, a spark plug for the Richwood offense all season long, poured in 17 points in the title game for the Rams.

LaDarrin Williams had another big night for the Rams as well. The forward had possibly his best offensive game of the postseason as he chipped in 15 points for Richwood.

The win was doubly sweet for Martin as he captured not just his second Class 3A championship as the Richwood head coach, but also the second championship with a son on the team.

Keldrick Martin was a senior guard for the Rams this season. Terry Martin Jr. played for his father in 2005 when Richwood won their first title since reopening the school in 1999.
