Ouachita to host Citgo Classic

The Saint Frederick Warriors upended the Ouachita Lions 9-4 Tuesday night in one of the marquee non-district match-ups in the early part of the season.

The game was tied 4-4 going into the fourth inning as both teams settled down on the mound and made some great defensive stops to go along with their solid pitching.

"Saint Frederick is a real quality baseball team," Ouachita head coach Brian Carter said. "We made some errors and they capitalized. We hit the ball pretty good."

Brian Gebhardt is one of several juniors leading the Lions this season. Gebhardt went 2-for-4 from the plate and had a pair of RBIs to lead the Lions.

Andy Roberts is also being counted on to give not just quality hits to Ouachita, but also some much needed pitching depth as he will play third base and pitch on occasion.

Jason Johnson also got a pair of hits against the Warriors. Johnson has been seen all over the field for the Lions.

"Jason does it all for us," Carter said. "He plays multiple positions and can just about do whatever we ask him to do."

This week, Ouachita will be the host school of the ninth annual Citgo/Ouachita Classic. The event will have games Thursday through Sunday at fields all across Ouachita Parish.

Ouachita, Neville and West Monroe will all host games throughout the weekend. The round robin tournament is a great buy for local baseball fans hungry to see great teams from all over the area. Tickets on Thursday and Friday are $6. Saturday games will be $8 at the gate.

"Most coaches want to get some games in and finalized their line-up," Carter said. "We guarantee each team will get four games in, weather permitting. We have some great clubs coming into the tournament."

Defending Class 5A champions Barbe High School of Lake Charles will play at West Monroe Thursday night.

Ouachita will be hosting Vicksburg, Miss. on Thursday night in the opening round of the tournament. Other area teams coming into the tournament include Ruston, Neville and Captain Shreve. Another squad, Warren Central High School, will also represent Mississippi.
