Sterlington looks ahead to district play
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The West Ouachita Chiefs hit the ball in critical times and got just enough defense late in the game to squeak by the Sterlington Panthers 3-2 Tuesday in another great non-district treat for local baseball fans.

West Ouachita (7-6) scored three runs in the third period, their only solid inning at the plate.

Sterlington (8-3) surrendered two errors in the inning that gave the Chiefs new life in the inning when it seemed the momentum would be stopped short of that final run total.

Sterlington responded with their own offensive fireworks in the fourth inning. The Panthers scored a pair of runs on nine hits but left the bases loaded in the fourth.

Cole Bagby was 2-for-4 with a RBI in the inning. Other main contributors to the season for Sterlington have included Stephen Gandy and Logan Dobson who are each contributing with timely hitting and solid defense.

"We made a couple of errors and they hit the ball pretty well," Sterlington coach David Parks said. "We fell behind."

Sterlington will now hit the road to Benton High School near Shreveport for tournament action.

Sterlington will first face Haughton on Thursday night. The Panthers look forward to the opportunity to play another quality opponent from a higher classification.

"Haughton is another real good 4A ball club," Parks said. "We have to come out focused and ready to do the things it takes to be successful."

As with most teams, the Sterlington squad looks to be coming together as they get in one more set of tournament games before district play rolls around.

The tournament runs through Saturday night.

Sterlington will visit Farmerville Tuesday at 6 p.m. for their first district contest of the season.
