Neville squeaks past Ruston
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Neville Tigers squeaked past longtime rival Ruston High School Tuesday night by a 7-6 margin.

Neville struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Drew Narmour to open the game. Neville also got a solid day at the plate from senior outfielder Truman Van Veckhoven.

Van Veckhoven went 2-for-4 in the game and also recorded an run for the Tigers. Neville had to play catch-up after the top of the first.

Ruston plated a pair of runs to grab the lead 2-0 after the top half of the first inning. That led to the Narmour shot that pulled Neville to within one run.

The teams traded runs the rest of the night and Neville got the relief pitching it needed late in the game to secure a big non-district win for the club.

The Tigers have several arms they will rely on in district play this season, and they are pleased so far with the relief.

"Our pitching is pretty deep," Neville head coach Tim O'Neal said. "Johnny Joplin and Matt Gayle are pitching in relief real well."

Gayle got out of a bases-loaded situation on the mound in the sixth inning before securing his first save in the seventh inning. Parks got his second win of the season as the starting and winning pitcher for Neville.

The Tigers will host Warren Central High School as part of Ouachita's Citgo Tournament this Thursday night.

Neville will then visit West Monroe on Friday night at 7 p.m. The Tigers see Ruston again at the Ouachita field on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday against host Ouachita Lions.

Area fans can see all of the action for $6 each day except Saturday night when ticket prices will be $8 at the gate.
