LSU starts NCAA tourney
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The LSU basketball team is the number eight seed in the South Regional of the NCAA Basketball tournament.

The 20th-ranked LSU men's basketball team, the champions of the Southeastern Conference, were scheduled to play a first-round NCAA Tournament game with 23rd-ranked Butler scheduled today, March 19, at 11:20 a.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Beating Butler would put the Tigers likely in a meeting with top-seed North Carolina on Saturday in a battle of two of the best teams in the country during the regular season.

LSU won the SEC regular season title for the first time in many years under first-year head coach Trent Johnson.

Johnson earned SEC coach of the year honors for his role with the Tigers. Marcus Thorton, a Baton Rouge, La. native took home player of the year awards for the Southeastern Conference.

LSU lost four of their final five games including a semi-final loss last Saturday in the SEC tournament against eventual tournament champion Mississippi State.

In a twist of possible disrespect toward the LSU team, LSU was given a No.8 seed in the bracket. The seed is the lowest ranking of a SEC regular season champion in the history of the league.
