Story Archives: Triple-double: Digging included

Triple-double: Digging included
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Just when you thought you have seen every statistic possible here comes another one from LSU Sports Information that really had to take some digging.

LSU's SEC basketball championship this season has enabled the Tigers to become the first in Southeastern Conference history to pull a "triple-double" — winning double-figure conference titles in the sports of football, men's basketball and baseball.

I don't know about you, but those triple-double figures always confused the heck out of me.

I think I am finally getting the hang of it. New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul has helped a lot there. My goodness, the guy has 20 points, 15 assists and 10 or more rebounds, steals, programs sold or promos a game.

LSU has now won 13 conference titles in baseball, and 10 in both football and men's basketball.

And, of course, I had to check out women's basketball, softball and tennis because I figured those sports would be getting close.

LSU softball has five regular season titles.

LSU women's basketball has three championships.

LSU men's tennis has five SEC titles.

By the way, did you know there are five members of the LSU men's tennis team from other countries? Sebastian Carlsson is from Uppsala, Sweden, and went to high school at Celsiusskilan Uppsala. Find that school on your recruiting hot spots.

So a quadruple double is a ways off ... if there is such a thing. And if there is, we'll here about it from somebody's sports information office.

Alabama is the only other school in the SEC to have reached at least 10 league titles in two of the three sports of football, men's basketball and baseball.

Overall, LSU has captured a total of 114 conference championships.

Alabama has 21 SEC football championships, Tennessee has 13 and Georgia 12.

Kentucky has 43 championships in basketball - there's a record that will not be broken.

Alabama has 13 baseball championships, while Florida and Mississippi State have 10 each.

If LSU can keep the likes of Les Miles, Van Chancellor, Trent Johnson, Paul Manieri and Yvette Giroud around, the championships should continue in Baton Rouge.

And that's the number Tiger fans are most interested in.
