Story Archives: Carroll effort falls short

Carroll effort falls short

The Carroll Lady Bulldogs (28-2) never found their offensive rhythm in a 57-37 loss to Vanderbilt Catholic on Thursday in the Class 4A semi-finals of the Top 28 tournament.

A great contingent of Carroll fans packed Fant-Ewing Coliseum to support the only parish school still alive in the ladies playoffs.

"On the offensive end, this was one of our lowest scoring games of the year," Carroll head coach Sheryl Madison said. "Obviously they did a very good defensive job on us."

The C-Dogs made a run in the second period that gave them a brief lead before the Terriers pulled back into a three-point advantage just before the halftime break.

The third quarter was deadly for Carroll as Vanderbilt outscored the C-Dogs 16-5. Junior post-player Theresa Plaisance led all players with 23 points. She scored 15 in the third quarter alone.

"We did a very, very poor job of shooting," Madison said. "We were cold. When you dig yourself into a hole, you try on defense to make some turnovers, but we still missed layups. That was the turning point in the game."

Carroll made just 16.1 percent of their shots in the second half. The team was ice cold from the free throw line as they converted on just 1-of-10 shots from the charity stripe.

Carroll was able to double-team Plaisance and hold the leading scorer of Vanderbilt to just six points in the first half. The effort stalled in the third quarter after teammates Sybil Washington (8 points, 10 rebounds) and Allison Crosby (10 points) began to hit on all cylinders as well.

Carroll will return most of their starting line-up and key reserves next year as they lost just twice this season. The year included an undefeated district championship slate and a three consecutive playoff victories before the loss to Vanderbilt Catholic.
