Police jury appoints Matheny to constable post

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury appointed William L. Matheny of Calhoun as Ward 6 constable during a special meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Matheny replaced Mike Lee, who resigned as constable in Ward 6 after it was learned Lee was a convicted felon. Convicted felons are barred from holding public office.
Matheny will serve until a constable is elected in an Oct. 17 special election. Qualifying for the Oct. 17 election will be held Aug. 12, 13 and 14.

Parish attorney Jay Mitchell said the jury asks that people who are appointed to fill an unexpired term agree not to run for that position when an election is held to fill the post. He said Matheny was in agreement with that request.

Lee resigned March 3 after the 4th Judicial District Attorney's office sought legal action to have him removed from office.

District Attorney Jerry Jones was notified by state Attorney General Buddy Caldwell to remove Lee after local media outlets reported Lee's criminal record.

Lee was elected last year as Ward 6 constable.
