Carroll to compete for state championship berth

The Carroll Lady Bulldogs (28-1) will play Vanderbilt Catholic School in the Class 4A semi-final round Thursday night at 8 p.m.

"It is so good to make the playoffs, but it is exceptional to be in this situation where you play in Monroe," Carroll head coach Shirley Madison said. "We just hope the city of Monroe comes out and supports our girls for this really important game."

Carroll, the No.2-seed in the playoffs, has blown away the competition in what could be the best season in school history for the Lady Bulldog program.

Twins Alexar and Elexar Tuglar have been instrumental in the success of the team. Alexar Tuglar averages a team-high 18 points while her sister scores 13 points per game.

The Lady Bulldogs have plenty of firepower and they spread the ball around quite nicely.

Janae Fountain is currently second on the team with 14 points per game as well as the leading defensive player, averaging six steals per ball game.

Deanna Brown is the force inside for the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points and 12 rebounds per game.

In the quarterfinals, Carroll smothered Peabody Magnet with a great defensive effort on their way to a convincing victory, 73-49.

Alexar Tuglar scored 25 points and Fountain added 22 points to pace Carroll. Carroll led from the beginning and got easy transition buckets off of a plethora of Peabody turnovers and miscues.

Vanderbilt Catholic (25-7) will present the biggest challenge to date for the Lady Bulldogs. The No. 3 ranked team in the state, Vanderbilt could be the biggest and strongest squad Carroll has seen this season.

"They are a good fundamental team," Madison said. "They have an All-American post player in Teresa Plaisance who can really score the basketball."

Carroll feels as if their district schedule and the previous playoff contenders have prepared them for the game as they prepare to stop one of the state's premier offenses.

"We played against some good teams," Madison said. "We just want to see the community get behind us and make a good showing in front of the home crowd on Thursday."
