Sterlington enlists help in fight against litter

Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland expects more than 100 volunteers to pick up trash for the annual Clean Up Sterlington Day. It will be held Saturday.

The annual event marks Sterlington's participation in the Great American Cleanup. This year, Breland expects some additional assistance.

Meanwhile, Breland challenged Sterlington residents to show their pride in their town by refraining from littering in the first place.

"Please have pride in your community, and please help us keep Sterlington clean," Breland said in an open letter to residents. "This is your home. Please treat it that way."

Volunteers Clean Up Sterlington Day encouraged to show up at Sterlington Town Hall at 8:00 a.m. Volunteers will receive garbage bags and collection equipment at Town Hall before receiving their assignments for clean-up activities.

Breland encouraged everyone to get out and pick up their town.

"We certainly need the help," Breland said.

Sterlington's litter problems have been an ongoing topic of conversation for the town's board of aldermen.

Last week, Breland told aldermen he sent requests for volunteers to Sterlington High School, Angus Chemical and several fraternities at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Breland said the overall response was positive and he expected more than 100 people to turn out for the cleanup day.

Following the cleanup, Sterlington will host a hamburger cookout for volunteers at Town Hall.
