Riverbend students take part in AMBER contest

Riverbend Elementary students are participating in a national poster contest which focuses on returning missing children home safely.

More than 400 children have been found and returned home safely since the AMBER Alert program started in 1996. The AMBER Alert program began when Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to help find abducted children.

AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcasting Emergency Response. It was created to honor 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. She was later found murdered.

Riverbend students will participate in a competition for the National Missing Children's Day poster contest.

The U.S. Department of Justice, through its Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Child Protection Division, sponsors the annual contest for fifth grade students.

Artwork chosen will be used by the department to promote its goal of finding missing children and returning them home safely.

The winning artwork is displayed at the National Missing Children's Day ceremony, which will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 25.

The national winner will travel to Washington with his or her parents and teacher to receive an award.
