LSU pounds out 17 hits in 16-0 win over UCF
BATON ROUGE -- Rightfielder Jared Mitchell homered twice and centerfielder Leon Landry hit his fifth homer of the year, while the Tigers collected 17 hits in an offensive eruption to lead No.1 LSU to a series sweep of UCF 16-0 Sunday in Alex Box Stadium.
The Tigers (7-0) completed their sixth straight regular season series sweep dating back to last season. LSU has won 23 straight regular-season games over the past two seasons.
UCF fell to 2-5 with Sunday's loss.
The season-high 16 runs scored by LSU were the most runs scored in a game by the Tigers since their 21-7 victory over UC-Irvine in last year's NCAA Super Regional final. LSU recorded a shutout for the first time since blanking McNeese State, 6-0, on April 23 of last season.
LSU starter Austin Ross (2-0) got the win for the Tigers Sunday, shutting out UCF in six innings of work, allowing two hits and striking out 10.
"I was very happy with the way Austin threw the ball today," head coach Paul Mainieri said. "He stayed down in the zone, had a good slider and kept his pitch count down. If he throws like that on a regular basis we're going to be in good shape."
Offensively, LSU was led by Mitchell, who finished 2-for-2 with five RBI and Sean Ochinko, who was 3-for-4. Ochinko finished the weekend 10-for-12 with eight RBI.
Shortstop DJ LeMahieu also contributed offensively, going 2-for-3 and scoring three runs. LeMahieu finished the weekend 7-for-10 with six RBI. He now leads the team in hitting with a .625 batting average.
The Tigers got the offense going early as they scored eight runs on six hits in the first inning.
Catcher Micah Gibbs got the scoring started for LSU in the first when he laced a single into right field scoring Landry and Ryan Schimpf to put LSU ahead 2-0.
Mitchell continued the scoring in the first when he blasted a three-run homer over the right field wall to put the Tigers up 5-0. It was Mitchell's first homer of the year.
After back-to-back singles by Sean Ochinko and Chad Jones, Landry hit a line-drive, three-run homer over the right field wall to cap the eight-run first inning.
The offensive explosion continued in the second inning for the Tigers beginning with a DJ LeMahieu single that scored Blake Dean, who walked. Gibbs, who also walked, then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-0 in favor of LSU. Mitchell walked before an Ochinko single scored LeMahieu. Mitchell later scored when third baseman Derek Helenihi singled to center to increase the Tiger lead to 12-0.
Mitchell's second homer came in the bottom of the third, a two-run shot over the right-field wall to make the score 14-0.
Jones and Austin Nola each hit solo homers in the eighth inning to give LSU a 16-0 advantage. It was the first career homer for both Jones and Nola.
