Bastrop manhandles West Ouachita, Chiefs clash with Neville

The West Ouachita basketball program dropped a pair of games to the Bastrop Rams Tuesday night on the road.

Bastrop went up 17-3 at the end of the opening quarter against the Chiefs. West Ouachita (9-19, 0-6) would eventually lose 64-42.

"We could not make the shots and they did is all it came down to," West Ouachita head coach Josh Brown said. "We have to rebound better and make shots. They jumped out to a big lead and it was downhill from there."

Bastrop (3-17, 2-4) made six three-point baskets in the opening frame as they built a commanding advantage.

Gary Thomas led the Chiefs with 12 points. Caci Phillps and Andrew Harris each scored nine points for the Chiefs.

West Ouachita will travel to Neville for their final regular season game this Friday night. It will be a chance for the Chiefs to play spoiler to potential playoff aspirations by the Tigers.

West Ouachita has learned to improve their rebounding after being so undersized in each district game. Lately, the Chiefs have experienced turnover issues that have plagued their chances at victory in district play.

Neville defeated the Chiefs 53-29 on Jan. 27. This game is about pride for the West Ouachita staff and team.

"It's the same thing as every game for us," Brown said. "We are undersized and we have to make shots and rebound the basketball to be able to play with anyone in this tough district."

The West Ouachita Lady Chiefs also will travel to Neville, who is currently in second place in the district.

West Ouachita lost to the Lady Rams of Bastrop Tuesday night to drop to 6-21 overall and 0-6 in district 2-4A competition.
