The Monroe Symphony League recently held the 2009 Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artists Competition in the Biedenharn Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Young musicians from across Louisiana came to compete in both Youth and Young Adult divisions.

Preliminary auditions were held throughout the day, culminating with an evening recital showcasing those contestants chosen to compete for final prizes.

After the evening performances, the contestants and members of the audience enjoyed a reception while the judges deliberated on the final winners of the competition.

Winners of the Youth division awards were violinist Sean Nathan of Shreveport, and pianist Andrew Tan of Monroe. Young Adult division winners were Michael Holdiness Jr. of Monroe on marimba, and pianist Ruben Reyes of Shreveport.

The judges also selected Ruben Reyes as the Grand Prize winner and awarded him the opportunity to perform with the Monroe Symphony during their 2009-10 concert season.
