Sterlington Panthers prepare for Lake Providence
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Sterlington Panthers (14-15, 3-3) will host Lake Providence on Senior night this Friday.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers each picked up wins at Farmerville Tuesday in key victories during district 2-2A play.

For the guys, Jordan Crew led the Panthers with 10 points in a 54-40 victory over the home-standing Farmers. Max Cook had six points as the Panthers spread the ball around and got to the free-throw line to secure the district victory.

"We did not shoot too well against their zone defense," Sterlington head coach Kevin Caballero said. "We did get to the free-throw line and also rebounded real well and I thought those were the differences in the game."

Seniors Max Cook and Blair Holland will be honored before the game Friday as the lone seniors for the Panthers this season.

Cook continues to be the statistical leader on offense for the Panthers. Holland has logged important minutes and is a defensive specialist for Sterlington.

Against Lake Providence, it will be important for Sterlington to rebound and shoot much better against a very quick and athletic Redskins squad.

"We need to do a better job of rebounding," Caballero said. "We have to get our shooting back on track and do a better job scoring the basketball."

The Lady Panthers scored one of their biggest wins of the season when they beat the Farmerville Lady Farmers, 43-42 in a thrilling finish.

Sterlington trailed the entire game until about two minutes remaining when the Lady Panthers made their move.

Lakeila Pounds led the way with 20 points in the district win. Sterlington trailed 28-19 at halftime as well as 32-26 going into the final stanza. Kenyatta Smoot came up big on the boards with 11 rebounds to go along with six points.

"We are getting better," Sterlington head coach Darlene Eubanks said. "We will have to rebound and play big time defense to beat Lake Providence."
