Local employers honored Story, Photos by Spc. Scott D. Longstreet, 527th Engineer Battalion Unit Public Affairs Representative
For Louisiana National Guard Soldiers of the 844th Horizontal Company and 1022nd Vertical Company, 527th Engineer Battalion, the support of employers is invaluable in pursuing military careers as Citizen-Soldiers. In an award ceremony at the units' West Monroe armory, three local employers were honored with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award. Capt. Mitchell Williams, a supervisor for the Swanson Corrections Center in Monroe was nominated for the prestigious ESGR award by Spc. Willie K. Goodin of Monroe, an equipment operator for the 1022nd. West Monroe natives Walter and Vera Gates were also recognized for their support. The couple are both supervisors for Home Assistant Services and were nominated by 844th equipment operator Spc. Toney L. Charles, also of West Monroe. The third award was presented to Wal-Mart supervisor Jerald Derouche of Monroe. He was nominated for the award by Sgt. Demetrius M. Johnson of West Monroe, an equipment operator for the 844th. Jack N. Humphries, state chairman of the Louisiana Committee for ESGR, local members of the ESGR, and Soldiers from both the 844th and the 1022nd were present for the award presentation. |
