Cultura Book Club members have luncheon, tour home The December meeting of Cultura Book Club was a Christmas luncheon at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, followed by a tour of the John Mark and Patti Wilhite home.
Luncheon guests were Patti Wilhite and Elizabeth Drewett, daughter and daughter-in-law of Cultura president Sue Drewett. Hostesses for the meeting were Emma Burkett, Gloria Camp and Jean Rugg.
After a delicious lunch and a reading by Jean Halsell of Clement C. Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas," the group was shuttled from the clubhouse to the Wilhite home. Patti Wilhite escorted members through her new home, which was elegantly decorated throughout for Christmas. The ceiling-high tree in the foyer was complemented by smaller Christmas trees and decorations appropriate to each room. Of the many special features of the house, one which attracted much attention from the guests was the large outdoor kitchen, complete with a conversation area around a fireplace.
Adding to the family atmosphere of the home tour was a medley of Christmas music played on the piano by Elizabeth Drewett. As the club members enjoyed refreshments, Kitty Liner read them the story "Teach the Children," which stressed the importance of teaching children the real meaning of Christmas. Wilhite accompanied her by reaching into a sleigh and producing a miniature symbol, as Liner told of its true significance in the story of Jesus' birth: a Christmas tress, a star, a candle, a wreath, a holly leaf, a gift, a candy cane, an angel, a bell, a tiny baby and Santa Claus. The story ended with an admonition to adults, "If you don't teach the children these things, then who will?" |
