The Monroe chapter of the English-Speaking Union will host the 2009 Shakespeare Competition at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Young Troupe Stage of the Strauss Playhouse.

The local competition selects one winner to participate at the national competition in New York City. The national winner gets a chance to participate in a week-long Shakespeare Festival & World Competition in London, England.

This year, winners from 11 local high schools will recite one sonnet and one scene from a Shakespeare play.
