The Sterlington Panthers and West Ouachita Chiefs tangled in both boys and girls basketball action on Tuesday night, prior to joining in on the New Year Classic at Ouachita Christian School that concludes Friday.

In the girls game played at West Ouachita, Sterlington raced out to a 27-17 halftime lead behind the solid shooting of Shania Haynes. Haynes scored 17 points in the first half on her way to a game-high 28 points to pace the Lady Panthers.

Brandi Packer scored 10 points for Sterlington while LaKelia Pounds chipped in five points.

West Ouachita could not control the ball in the first quarter and that led to Sterlington mounting a lead the Lady Chiefs could not overcome.

Ashley Frost led the way for the Lady Chiefs with 13 points. Frost caught fire in the fourth quarter and almost led the Lady Chiefs back within striking distance with nine points in the fourth quarter alone.

On Saturday, the Lady Panthers upended the Lady Warriors of Saint Frederick 55-48. Pounds lead the way for Sterlington (10-9) in the contest with 27 points.

The Lady Warriors were led by Emily Ellender with 13 points. Saint Frederick (1-17) will look to get back on the winning track when they also visit OCS Friday for the Maggie Moo's New Year Classic.

On Tuesday, the boys squad from Sterlington also visited West Ouachita to battle the Chiefs.

West Ouachita led the game from start to finish in a 66-58 win over their parish rivals from across the river.

West Ouachita was led by Gary Thomas who scored 19 points for the Chiefs. Antoine Ford added 13 points and six assists for West Ouachita.

"We had several guys contribute in a big way," West Ouachita head coach Josh Brown said. "I thought our defensive intensity was pretty good tonight and we controlled them on the boards."

Jordan Crew led Sterlington in scoring with 14 points. Max Cook chipped in 12 points for the Panthers.
