River Oaks races off to great hardwood start
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The River Oaks Mustangs experienced the thrill of winning as well as the agony of defeat as they played Prairie View in a double-header last weekend in Bastrop.

Will White and Cody Trichell each scored in double figures as River Oaks pounded Claiborne Academy 62-52 to begin the two-day event Friday evening.

Both players are averaging over 12 points per game and pace a group of experienced Mustangs.

"We had some kids step up and make plays," head coach Roger Stockton said. "We had good defensive pressure and forced them into giving up the basketball several times."

River Oaks (12-2) lost their second game in the event to Riverdale, the only team to beat the Mustangs this season.

Riverdale won a good game at the beginning of the season and again fought past River Oaks on Saturday afternoon, 64-44.

The Lady Mustangs also made the trip to Bastrop to play in the Prairie View tournament. River Oaks was pounded by Claiborne in their first game Friday, 53-11.

Tiffany Brown led the way in scoring for River Oaks who has not been able to recover from poor shooting and rebounding to start the season.

Claiborne overwhelmed the Lady Mustangs with their disciplined defense that led to several transition baskets on the other end.

River Oaks will go to Trinity Episcopal School in Natchez, Miss. for a pair of games on Friday night.

The Lady Mustangs will battle the district champions of a year ago when they play Trinity at 6 p.m.

The boys will follow in what will be the first district game in the Mississippi School Athletic Association for the Mustangs.

The Trinity teams are off to a 1-0 start after defeating Adams County Christian to begin the week.
