Carroll upends Richwood in classic battle

Carroll's Xavier Lee led the way Tuesday with 25 points as the Bulldogs outlasted the Richwood Rams in overtime, 69-65, at "The Dog Pound."

"We have been getting better," Carroll head coach Jesse Burnett said. "We had lost three games by one point and kept battling with these guys."

Rydell Harris led the way for Richwood in losing effort. The 6-5 Grambling signee scored 20 points in the loss.

The two teams went back-and-forth all night as fans got a taste of a great rivalry that began in the 1970s during the days of the old Richwood high school before it was reopened in 1999.

Lee forced overtime and the Carroll depth took over and overpowered the young Rams on the defensive end.

Carroll got multiple big defensive stops and was able to hit free throws down the stretch in the extra frame.

Richwood is one of 12 teams playing in the Don Redden Memorial Classic on Friday at Ouachita High School. The Championship game will begin at about 8 p.m. at the Lion's Den.

The two teams also hooked up on the girl's side Tuesday night. Carroll raced out to an early 11-4 lead and never trailed in a 73-42 victory for Carroll.

Akima Morris paced Carroll (14-1) to the victory, their fourth consecutive win over Richwood.

Richwood (7-12) could not get the rebounds it needed to keep Carroll out of offensive rhythm and stay in the game.

Carroll, West Monroe and Neville will all be in action in girls basketball during the weekend at Richwood.

Richwood will host a girls tournament beginning Friday night and running until Saturday at Rams Gymnasium.

Neville, Richwood, West Monroe and Wossman girls are all slated for the Saturday event.
