Masur presents free lecture, reception Thursday Mora Beauchamp-Byrd will give a lecture, "John Scott's 'Museum': Art, Race and Appropriation," at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe.
A 6 p.m. reception will precede the lecture. The events are free and open to the public.
Beauchamp-Byrd, is an assistant professor of art and curator of art collections at Xavier University. She authored the John Scott Retrospective catalogue essay, "Yesterday's Doorway: John Scott's Iconographic Portraits of New Orleans." Her essay examines how Scott was influenced by the myriad of cultures and traditions present in his native city of New Orleans. In her lecture, Beauchamp-Byrd will expand her consideration of Scott's career to explore how his work fits into the history of Western art.
The program was made possible through a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The John Scott Retrospective continues through Jan. 18. Catalogues are available for $15. |
