Lady Rebels defeat Lady Panthers

The West Monroe Lady Rebels pounded the Parkway Lady Panthers 63-26 on Monday night inside Rebel Gymnasium.

The Lady Rebels pounced on the Lady Panthers early with a smothering defensive effort that caused severe turnover problems for the visitors from Shreveport.

West Monroe led 16-5 after the first quarter of action. Senior forward Kassietta Brown paced the Lady Rebels with 14 points in the victory.

Brown, a Southern Mississippi signee, scored five points in the first quarter to get out to a hot start.

West Monroe (8-3) pressed their way to even bigger and better things offensively in the second period as they built a 28-10 lead at intermission.

Senior guard Miranda Holt put in five points of her own, going 2-of-2 from the free-throw line and draining a late three-point shot to end the second quarter.

Brown made her biggest contribution to the victory in the third quarter with seven points. Brown was 4-of-5 from the free-throw line and made 2-of-3 from the field to open things up after halftime.

"We had some good moments tonight," West Monroe head coach John Green said. "We still have a lot of work to do but we made some plays on both ends of the floor."

Senior forward Jessica Lathan poured in eight points in the win for the Lady Rebels. The three-year starter scored most of her points in the first half as younger Lady Rebels got valuable playing time in the fourth quarter when the Lady Rebels were clearly headed for victory.

Senior guard Jasmine Jones was the last West Monroe player to score in double figures. Jones scored eight points before the half and finished with a season-high 10 points for the Lady Rebels.

West Monroe will travel to Ponchatoula to participate in the Ponchatoula High School tournament that begins Friday.
