ULM professor speaks at English-Speaking Union meeting

The November meeting of the English-Speaking Union featured Dr. John Sutherlin, whose topic was "An Overview of U.S. Politics: Mega Dollars, Little Sense."

Sutherlin is an assistant professor of political science and co-director of social services research at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

Sutherlin pointed out the challenges and problems facing both the present and the incoming administration, saying many problems focused on today have been years in forming. A spirited question-and-answer session followed his talk.

Presiding over the meeting was Fred Huenefeld, who read a correspondence from Peter Harris, the October speaker from England. In his letter, Harris expressed pleasant memories of his two-day trip to Monroe.

Minette Saber, vice president, announced future meetings in February: the Shakespeare competition on Feb. 8 and Elliot Engel, a favorite nationwide ESU speaker on Feb. 12. Engel has scheduled lectures at three area schools to further increase interest in English literature.

The refreshment table was centered with bronze and gold chrysanthemums in a footed oriental container with fall foliage. Refreshments featured a variety of finger foods prepared by Bobbie Legan. More than 70 members and guests attended the event.
