Fire destroys Monroe Transit System bus
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
According to Monroe Transit System officials, approximately between 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, a 1997 Gillig Phantom Monroe Transit bus caught on fire while on the North Loop route.

A passing motorist alerted the bus driver about smoke being seen at the rear of the bus. The MTS driver quickly pulled over near the intersection of Pargoud and Marquette. All of the passengers on board were evacuated and moved to a safe distance from the bus. No injuries were reported.

Monroe police and fire personnel responded. Monroe Transit officials say the fire totally destroyed the bus. Preliminary assessments show that the fire possibly started near the rear of the bus. A more detailed assessment will be made before it will be determined as to how the fire started.

Monroe Transit general manager Joseph Comerford comments, "We are thankful that our driver responded quickly and that no one was injured. We do have insurance coverage and we should be reimbursed for the value of the bus. In order to enhance passenger safety when bus fires occur, we have added an Automatic Fire Suppression system to the three new buses we added to our fleet earlier this year. We will also have this system on the six new buses we are adding to our fleet in spring 2009."
