Neville hosts Breaux Bridge

The Neville Tigers throttled West Ouachita for the second week in a row, with a 63-7 score, Friday night at Bill Ruple Stadium.

Neville expanded on a 29-8 victory in week 10 to advance to a second-round Class 4A match-up against Breaux Bridge,

Running back DeAndre Reed began the Neville onslaught with a 64-yard jaunt to give the Tigers a quick 7-0 advantage. Reed had 97 yards on five carries for the night. Josh Ellis led Neville in rushing with 99 yards and 2 touchdowns on just six carries.

Following a Rico Pollard touchdown run of four yards for Neville, the Tigers defense got into the action with a 53-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Justin Colvin. Devante Garrison also had a fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter from 23-yards out.

Neville led 50-0 at halftime with reserves taking a lot of snaps in the second half. Neville quarterback Jeremy Runner threw the first touchdown pass of his varsity career in the second quarter with a five-yard pass to Des Collins.

Runner was also 2-of-2 for 15 yards passing. Runner has completed all seven of his pass attempts since taking over for the injured Taylor Burch, who tore a knee ligament three weeks ago.

Neville running back O'Sha Ceasar scored on a two-yard touchdown run to open scoring in the third quarter.

Neville credited a lot of their success Friday to a stellar defensive effort. The West Ouachita offense had run with success against almost everyone. Neville limited the Chiefs to just 60 yard rushing in the contest.

"Our guys were real focused," Neville head coach Mickey McCarty said. "We played a good game. Hats off to the defense for keeping the goose egg up there most of the game."

A 23-yard touchdown run by West Ouachita's Ray Moss in the fourth quarter put the Chiefs on the scoreboard for the final margin, 63-7. Moss was the leading rusher for West Ouahcita with 46 yards on four carries and the touchdown.

Neville pressure hounded quarterback Matt Calhoun all night as he was held to minus-10 yards rushing and was 5-of-11 for 21 yards passing.

A young West Ouachita will return most of the defensive and offensive line and key skill people such as Moss and Billy Minnifield, who will hope to make a return to the playoffs next season.

Neville will host Breaux Bridge in the second round of the playoffs this Friday night. Breaux Bridge may be known for the Crawfish festival, but the football program also met Bastrop in the 4A state championship game in 2005.

Breaux Bridge (8-2) lost to the top seed in Class 3A, Notre Dame, 14-12 to begin the season. They did not lose again until a 7-0 setback to Northside in week seven.

A first-round win over Sam Houston by a score of 31-13 saw the Breaux Bridge defense get turnovers early and often in shutting down the high-powered Sam Houston passing attack.

The key for Neville this week will be controlling the football on offense. Breaux Bridge has limited opponents to seven points or less in seven different games this season.
