Story Archives: West Ouachita plays Neville for second place

West Ouachita plays Neville for second place

Second-place in district 2-4A will be on the line when the Neville Tigers visit "Red" Sims Stadium this Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff against West Ouachita.

Neville, looking to get the taste of a 26-7 loss to Byrd last week out of their mouths, have used one of the best backfield combinations in the area to climb into a tie for second-place alongside West Ouachita.

"We have to execute better than we did," Neville head coach Micky McCarty said. "(Quarterback) Taylor (Burch) has done some good things. West Ouachita has a real fine football team and we have to come ready to play."

Running back DeAndre Reed joins Burch to form a daunting task for the West Ouachita defense.

However, West Ouachita uses an option attack, similar to what Byrd used last week to take advantage of Neville. Byrd rushed for 230 yards against the Tigers.

Also, two passes for touchdowns were the result of Byrd springing the play-action pass on the Neville defenders.

Last week, the Chiefs hosted the district champion Bastrop Rams in a contest that West Ouachita played well in, but could not match the strength of the Bastrop offense.

Bastrop quarterback Rueben Randle torched the West Ouachita secondary for 296 yards and three touchdowns in the loss for the Chiefs.

Quarterback Matt Calhoun of West Ouachita had a touchdown pass and 124 yards of total offense (88 rushing 36 passing) against Bastrop. Coaches have been impressed with first-year starting signal caller Calhoun, who has commanded the huddle and can score with the run or the pass.

Jarvis Grayson and Billy Minnifield will be there Friday to run with Calhoun in a talented West Ouachita backfield.

From a defensive standpoint at West Ouachita, the Chiefs will have just a few days to fix their pass coverage issues before another talented quarterback comes calling.

One local team will lock-up a first-round playoff home game with the win on Friday night at "Red" Sims Stadium.
