Story Archives: Sterlington meets Lake Providence

Sterlington meets Lake Providence
by Cody Futrell - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Sterlington Panthers (3-5, 1-1) have shown steady offensive improvement over the course of the season.

The defense has won some games, and the offense has put up more points in the last two games than in the first three contests combined. The Panthers will work to continue that improvement in week nine as they travel to Lake Providence (4-4).

Lake Providence, under first-year head coach Sonny Nason, has reinvented themselves as a viable 2A opponent after years of frustration on the gridiron.

"Coach (Sonny) Nason is doing a great job over there," Sterlington head coach Mike Collins said. "They have improved a lot and we will have to play a real good game to be successful."

Lake Providence is coming off an impressive victory last Friday night against Jonesboro-Hodge in what some would call a 22-17 "upset."

Sterlington knows the feeling as they defeated then top-ranked Ouachita Christian a few weeks back. Now, Sterlington is recovering from a heartbreaking homecoming loss to Farmerville, 51-50 in overtime last week.

Lake Providence is led on offense by freshman quarterback Lamar Carraway. A 45-yard pass to his favorite target JoNathan Sanders was the pivotal play to set an Eric Edwards touchdown in the final minute last week at Jonesboro-Hodge.

Lake Providence is led on defense by senior Robert Atkins. The effort against Jonesboro-Hodge was the third lowest point total allowed this season by Lake Providence, which was a big improvement from the start of their district schedule.

While youth has been a problem early in the year for the Lake Providence squad, the team has rallied around a coach who has not only rallied his team, but the community that surrounds the school.
