Ouachita looks to handle Huntington

The Ouachita Lions (6-2, 5-1 in district 1-5A) hope things start off faster and smoother this Friday than they did a week ago against Captain Shreve.

Three early fumbles put Ouachita on their heels before the defense put the offense in a position to come through for points.

A Huntington Raiders team hungry for a win will be the challenge this week in another big district 1-5A contest.

"They are so athletic," Ouachita head coach John Carr said. "We cannot have a slow start and the defense must play well in their own assignments."

Huntington has started slow this season and struggled to find the endzone against the upper class of the district.

Losses to Ruston, West Monroe and Byrd by a combined 120-6 have proven to be traps for the Raiders even though they have the athletes to compete with most in the state.

"They might struggle a little in these big games but not because they are short on athleticism," Carr said. "We will have to take care of the football to be successful."

Running back Montrell Conner and quarterback Corey Treadway have provided a great combination in the Ouachita backfield.

Conner had three first-half fumbles but recovered for over 100-yards rushing for the sixth time this season. Treadway threw two touchdown passes to help along the Lions as well.

Courtney Blakes, a ULM commitment, continues to play solidly and led the Lions in tackles the past three weeks.
